Even in its dystopian vision of a walled-off Manhattan, Carpenter's film keeps the twin towers recognizable on the skyline.
Trivia: Almost the whole film was shot in St. Louis, where a 1976 fire had left blocks of ruined buildings that gave Carpenter the devastated look he needed; only a little footage — a misty Manhattan skyline and a sequence on Liberty Island — was actually shot in New York.
