Well into the film, not at the start, Thomas Crown races a catamaran far out on Long Island Sound, off Norwalk, Connecticut. The towers are still visible on the skyline behind him, from a distance well beyond the film's other, closer New York shots.
Trivia: According to the film's director's commentary, the towers' visibility from this far out is an atmospheric optical effect rather than an ordinary sightline; the scene was filmed dozens of miles from Manhattan.
